Softball Wins Twice on Final Day in Florida

Violets Head North With 7-3 Record

The New York University softball team won the final two games of its annual spring break trip to Florida, defeating The College of New Jersey 8-3 and SUNY Oswego 7-0 on Friday, March 22.

NYU will return to the Big Apple with a 7-3 record, while TCNJ is now 11-5 and Oswego's overall mark is 2-8.

The Violets avenged a pair of earlier losses to TCNJ with a come-from-behind win in game one of the day. The Lions led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth when a two-RBI double from Serena Ponciano tied the game. NYU took the lead in the fifth on a two-run home run from Mary Tindall and added a pair of insurance runs the next inning on another two-RBI double off the bat of Ponciano.

Maggie Swan earned the win to improve to 3-0 in the circle. Swan, a freshman, tossed her first-career complete game, while striking out six and allowing just two earned runs.

In game two, Karissa Zubulake and Cassi Parulis combined for the shutout, with the former tossing 5.0 innings to earn the win and the latter throwing the final two innings to get the save.

NYU got on the board in the third inning with an RBI double hit by Ashley Mains. RBI doubles from Rachel Colbus and Liz Carter an inning later made the score 3-0 before the Violets added four more insurance runs in the seventh.

Ponciano led NYU in hitting during its trip, going 17-for-36 (.472), while Diana King (.440) and Mains (.438) will also head back to NYC with batting averages above .400. Swan's three wins and 1.07 ERA are tops among the squad's pitchers.

The Violets return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 26, when they host Rutgers University-Newark at 4pm at Bohoshy Field on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx, NY.
