The New York University men's volleyball team won its United Volleyball Conference (UVC) opener, defeating previously-unbeaten Massachusetts Institute of Technology in three sets (25-17, 25-17, 25-17), on Friday, February 8, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
NYU evened its overall record at 4-4 with its third-straight win, while the Engineers saw their five-match, season-opening winning streak come to an end.
The Violets dominated play in front of a packed crowd in Brooklyn, out-hitting their opponents .394-.000, while doubling up MIT in blocks, 20-10.
"That was by far our best effort of the season, a tremendous performance," said Head Coach
Jose Pina. "It was a complete match against a very solid squad."
Alex Li led NYU with a match-best 11 kills. The junior was one of four Violets to record double-digit attempts and an attack percentage of .250 or higher.
Matin Bikdeli handled the setting duties for NYU and dished out a match-high 30 assists, while also playing a big role at the net with six blocks.
"I thought we had a great week of practice and it showed tonight," added Pina. "We came out healthy and everyone is in a good spot mentally, so we need to keep the momentum going tomorrow."
The Violets return right back to the court tomorrow at 1pm when they continue UVC play against Elmira College.
