Men's Volleyball Sweeps Elmira

Violets Win Fourth Straight Match

The New York University men's volleyball team won its fourth-straight match, defeating Elmira College in straight sets (25-22, 25-14, 25-15) in a United Volleyball Conference (UVC) match on Saturday, February 9, at NYU's Brooklyn Athletic Facility.

"We've had a great run of practices the last week, week and a half," said Head Coach Jose Pina. "As we've gotten better in practicing and having a healthier team, we're getting to where we want to be."

The Violets (5-4, 2-0 UVC) took a quick 7-2 lead in the opening set, but the Soaring Eagles (5-6, 0-2 UVC) came roaring back with the next five points to force a tie. The score was knotted again at 13-13 when NYU tallied the next three points and never trailed again.

The score was tied 6-6 in the second set when the Violets went on a 4-0 run. NYU then expanded its lead as many as 12 points before posting the 11-point win.

In the final set, the Violets turned an early 3-1 deficit into a 6-3 lead with five straight points. NYU led the rest of the way and put a stamp on the victory with a final-point ace by Evan Lindley, who led the team with nine kills and six aces.

"The strength of our team is in our aggressive serving. Today we served really, really well," Pina explained.

Matin Bikdeli led the way with 21 assists while registering four kills on only five attempts. Bikdeli and Tyler Flood each totaled five blocks.

Overall, the Violets posted a .314 hitting percentage to Elmira's .194.

"We started off slowly, but once we started receiving well our offense took control," Pina said. "We are a power team. We're not going to out-finesse anybody."

The Violets return to action this Wednesday, February 13, when they cross under the Hudson River through the Holland Tunnel (traffic permitting) to face Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. First serve is set for 7:30pm.
