Women's Basketball Wins Regular-Season Finale

Violets Defeat Brandeis on Senior Day

The New York University women's basketball team finished its regular-season schedule with a 64-58 University Athletic Association (UAA) victory over visiting Brandeis University on Saturday, February 23, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan..

The Violets (14-10, 6-8) quickly fell behind 11-0, but proceeded to score the next 20 points and never trailed again. The Judges (7-17, 3-11) finally scored again with just 47 seconds remaining as NYU held a 20-13 lead after the first quarter.

"We gave their shooters some comfortable looks at the beginning," said Head Coach Meg Barber. "But then we locked in defensively, which has been a key for us all season. Our defense sparked our offensive production."

NYU scored the first five points of the second quarter to open up a 12-point lead, 25-13.

The Judges pulled to within six points on two occasions before Janean Cuffee's layup closed the scoring as the Violets went ahead 33-25 at halftime.

Brandeis continued to cut into the NYU lead and pulled within three points, 40-37, midway through the third quarter. However, the Violets regained momentum by scoring the next five points and embarking on a 12-2 streak to take a 52-39 advantage into the final quarter.

NYU's dominant run continued into the fourth as the hosts scored the first five points to open up a game-high 18-point lead, 57-39.

Brandeis ended the game on a 19-7 run and pulled within six at the final buzzer.

Lauren Koyama led a balanced scoring attack for NYU with 17 points. NYU's lone senior, Olivia Linebarger, scored 12 points and added a game-high eight rebounds. Cuffee finished with 11 points and a game-high six assists, while Shaye McGoey and Katie Foos each scored nine points.

"On Senior Day, everyone was working to get the win for Liv," Barber revealed. "It was nice to see her lead us in rebounding and be an offensive catalyst when we needed some buckets."

Camila Casanueva and Sarah Jaromin each had 10 points for Brandeis.

The Violets, who have completed the regular season with a winning record, now await a potential postseason bid to play in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship Tournament. The field will be announced this Monday, February 25.
