Women's Basketball Advances in ECAC Tournament

NYU Defeats Washington & Jefferson to Move on to Semifinals

The New York University women's basketball team defeated Washington & Jefferson University 52-42 in the quarterfinal round of the 2019 Division III Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament on Friday, March 1, at Cabrini University in Radnor, PA.

NYU (15-10) trailed the Presidents (18-9) 34-31 after three quarters, but opened the fourth quarter on a 13-2 run and never looked back en route to the victory, which advances Violets to tomorrow's semifinal round.

Lauren Koyama opened up the final quarter with a three-pointer to tie the game and hit a second triple with 5:26 on the clock which put NYU ahead by five, 41-36.

Shaye McGoey followed up Koyama's second three-ball with back-to-back buckets to extend the NYU lead to nine and NYU led by at least six the rest of the way en route to the 10-point win.

The Violets trailed 13-7 late in the first quarter, but closed the frame on a 5-0 run to get with one point after the opening 10 minutes.

Annie Barrett scored all seven of her points in the second quarter as NYU outscored W&J 9-6 to take a 21-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.

NYU led by as many as eight in the third quarter, but a late Presidents' run put them ahead going into the final 10 minutes, before Koyama and McGoey helped lead the Violets to their 15th win of the season. 

Janean Cuffee, who also factored into the strong fourth quarter with six points and three assists, led the Violets with 14 points and five dimes, while Koyama added 13 off the bench. McGoey finished with nine points, including seven in the final quarter, to go along with a career-high eight rebounds. Barrett also grabbed eight boards and had three steals to go along with her seven points in a game-high 38 minutes of action.

Danielle Parker led W&J with game-highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds.

NYU will take on Misericordia University in Saturday's semifinal at Cabrini. The host Caviliers will play Grove City College in the first semifinal of the day, which is slated to begin at 3pm.
