The New York University women's basketball team suffered a 68-48 setback to host University of Chicago in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Sunday, February 17, in Chicago.
Chicago, which entered the game ranked 20th in the WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Division III poll, improved to 19-5 this season and 10-3 in UAA play, while the Violets' record now stands at 13-10 overall and 5-8 in UAA action.
The Maroons scored the first 11 points of the game and led 23-4 after the first quarter. The hosts increased their lead to a game-high 22 points early in the second quarter, but a late Violets' rally made the score 36-21 at halftime.
NYU continued to dig into the Chicago lead, cutting the deficit to seven, 41-34, with just under a minute to play in the third quarter on a free throw from
Bianca Notarainni.
The Violets were unable to get any closer as Chicago pulled away in the fourth quarter to make the final margin 20 points.
NYU, which entered the contest, shooting 32.3% from three-point range this season, shot just 1-of-19 (5.3%) from long range in Sunday's loss.
Janean Cuffee scored 13 points to lead the Violets, while
Shaye McGoey chipped in with 12 points off the bench.
Olariche Obi paced four Maroons in double figures with 13 points, while also grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.
NYU returns to the court on Saturday, February 23, when it hosts Brandeis University in its regular season finale. Tip-off is scheduled for 1pm at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.
