Lauren Koyama scored a career-high 26 points off the bench as the New York University women's basketball team rallied from an early deficit to defeat visiting Carnegie Mellon 61-52 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Sunday, February 10, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.
Koyama was joined in double figures by
Shaye McGoey, who also came off the Violets' bench, to help NYU (13-8, 5-6 UAA) outscore the Tartans (11-11, 2-9 UAA) 42-1 in bench points.
"It's not really about a starting five or players off the bench for this group," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "Whoever we put on the floor knows their job and today it was Lauren and Shaye who did the scoring for us."
Carnegie Mellon led by nine points midway through the second quarter before Koyama and the Violets ended the half on a 12-0 run and scored the first three points of the second half to lead 31-25.
NYU never trailed in the second half, leading by as many as 11 points on one of Koyama's career-high eight three-pointers which went through the net with 5:40 to play.
"I felt very good out there today," said Koyama, a sophomore. "Annie (Barrett) and the rest of my teammates did a great job finding me in open spots."
Barrett dished out nine assists in the victory, while also pulling down eight rebounds as the Violets were able to hold on for the nine-point win to improve to 9-2 at the Sportsplex this season.
NYU will look to make it three in a row on Friday, February 15, when it travels to St. Louis, MO, to take on Washington University in St. Louis. Tip-off against the Bears is slated for 6pm (Central).
