Violets Defeat Mount Saint Mary 4-0

The New York University men's soccer team defeated Mount Saint Mary College 4-0 on Saturday, October 26, in Newburgh, NY.

The Violets (7-5-1), who have won seven of their last eight games, snapped the Knights' (12-5-1 ) eight-game winning streak.

NYU took the lead in the game's opening moments when Santiago Huertas (Bogota, Colombia/Archbishop McCarthy) converted a pass from Maxi Rodriguez (Chula Vista, CA/St. Augustine) and tallied his first goal of the season with only 2:45 gone in the contest.

The Violets put some distance between themselves and their opponents by then scoring two more goals with a six-minute span later in the half.

Evan Lewis (La Jolla, CA/La Jolla ) scored his first career goal, unassisted, at 31:07. Then, at the 36:26 mark, Vincent Bulzoni recorded his first goal of the season assisted by Matteo Russo (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy).

The Violets completed the afternoon's scoring at 64:00 when Talal Said (Amman, Jordan/King's Academy) tallied his second of the campaign on an assist by Ben Green (London, United Kingdom/Campbell Hall).

"A great job by a couple of our freshmen, Evan and Talal, and Santi got us started with a great individual effort and shot from the top of the box," said Head Coach Kim Wyant. "The team continues to create quality chances, and we finished a number of them today."

NYU goalkeepers Luca Mancuso (Miami, FL/Montverde Academy) and Nick Vafiadis (Englewood, NJ/Bergen Catholic) each set aside one shot as the pair combined for the shutout.

The Violets out-shot the Knights 11-7 overall.

"Our defense has been solid all season and produced another clean sheet today," Wyant added. "We continue to limit team's chances because of our outstanding back four defenders."

This was the last non-conference matchup of the season for NYU.

The Violets return to University Athletic Association (UAA) action next weekend when they face the University of Rochester on Friday, November 1, at 7:30pm in Rochester, NY, and Emory University on Sunday, November 3, at 1:30pm in Atlanta, GA.
