The New York University men's soccer team defeated Washington University in St. Louis 1-0 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Friday, October 18, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
The Violets (6-4-1, 3-0) won their sixth-straight game, their fifth by shutout, to remain unbeaten in the UAA. The Bears dropped to 6-4-1, 1-2.
After a scoreless first half, NYU struck quickly in the second as
Sergio Monton (Madrid, Spain/Fundacion Fomento) controlled the ball for a bit and then shot it past Bears' keeper Connor Mathes for the game's only tally. It was the senior's third goal of the season.
There were limited scoring chances throughout the rest of the game, despite pressure being put on by Wash U. to achieve the tying goal.
Luca Mancuso (Miami, FL/Montverde Academy) faced only two shots on goal the entire way in recording the shutout for NYU.
Mathes finished with three saves as the Bears out-shot the Violets 11-6 overall and led in corner kicks 7-2.
"It was a good win, a gritty win, and I'm very proud of the guys," said Head Coach
Kim Wyant. "They came at us quickly and we withstood a lot of pressure. But, we can only enjoy this one for a few minutes because we have lots of important games left, starting with Chicago on Sunday."
The Violets are right back on the pitch this Sunday, October 20, when they host another UAA opponent, #5-ranked University of Chicago, at 1:30pm at Gaelic Park.
