The New York University men's soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over Carnegie Mellon University as the Violets continued University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Saturday, October 12, in Pittsburgh,PA.
Saturday's win over CMU was NYU's first in the series since October 26, 2007, when the Violets defeated the Tartans 2-1 in Pittsburgh, PA.
NYU (5-4-1, 2-0 UAA) struck late in the second half to grab the road victory against the Tartans (4-6-1, 0-2 UAA).
The lone goal of the contest was scored by Maxi Rodriguez (Chula Vista, CA/St. Augustine) in the 72nd minute of play off of a feed from Sergio Monton (Madrid, Spain/Fundacion Fomento).
"We showed true determination today, especially in those last 15 minutes of play," said Head Coach Kim Wyant. "Maxi had a great goal off of the feed from Sergio and they executed a crucial play."
Luca Mancuso was busy in net for NYU, recording four saves while notching his second win of the season. Nick Vafiadis (Englewood, NJ/Bergen Catholic) closed out the game in net, tallying two saves on Saturday.
"We've stayed together as a team and are working hard heading into game days," added Wyant. "As a whole, we are staying disciplined and focused on the games ahead of us."
After dropping their first four games of the season, the Violets are now 5-0-1 in their last six.
The Violets return to the pitch next Friday, October 18, when they play host to Washington University in St. Louis in another UAA contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
