The New York University men's basketball team was defeated by the University of Chicago 74-68 on Sunday, January 20, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.
The Violets (6-10, 0-5 UAA) fell behind from the start, 10-0, but quickly pulled within four, 13-9, on a jumper by
Cade Hoppe.
The Maroons (11-5, 4-1) then went on a 10-2 streak and opened up a game-high 12-point lead, 23-11.
The Violets cut their deficit to five, 34-29, on
Dom Cristiano's jam with 1:23 left, but still trailed at halftime 36-30.
Jimmy Martinelli's layup to open the second half brought NYU within four.
But, Chicago again went up by 12 again, 50-38, with 12:46 left in the game.
The Violets kept digging and crept within three, 51-48, on Alex Cassieri's three-pointer with 10:13 remaining, and then again, 54-51, on
Jule Brown's free throw with nine minutes left.
Chicago then went up by seven, but another Cassieri three-pointer brought NYU within three, 66-63, with 1:38 remaining.
The Maroons scored next, but
Jordan Harris' layup again brought NYU within three with 35 ticks remaining.
However, Chicago hit six free throws in the final 31 seconds to secure the win.
Cristiano led NYU with 16 points and a season-high 17 rebounds. Cassieri finished with 13 points and
Bobby Hawkinson had 10.
Jordan Baum led Chicago with 23 points.
The Violets out-rebounded the Maroons, 44-30, but Chicago connected on 11 three-pointers while the Violets were only successful on four.
The Violets return to action on Friday, January 25, when they travel to upstate New York and face the University of Rochester for another UAA contest. Tip-off is set for 8:00pm.
