The New York University men's soccer team found themselves down 2-0 late in the first half, but battled back to defeat Baruch College 3-2 on Wednesday, September 19, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
NYU (6-1-0) scored a goal just before halftime and followed it up with two more in the second half to defeat the Bearcats (2-3-0) and earn its sixth-straight victory.
Baruch opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Natari Mohammed scored on a rebound from Jacob Gorodetsky. NYU goalkeeper
Grant Engel saved Gorodetsky's penalty kick, but Mohammad was in the right place at the right time and put away the rebound. The Bearcats doubled their lead less than four minutes later as Javier Crespo gained control of an unsettled ball in the box and shot it past Engel.
From there, it was all NYU as
Maxi Rodriguez scored his first goal of the season in the 42nd minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Rodriguez took a perfectly placed pass from
Richie Rambarran and fired it past Kellen Sela, the Baruch goalkeeper.
Sergio Monton tied the game at 2-2 in the 57th minute after Sela made a pair of saves. First,
Owen Smith shot it at Sela, then
Oliver Kleban followed it up with a rebound that Sela was also able to deny, but Monton took a third shot and placed it into the back of the net to knot the score.
The Violets were awarded a penalty kick in the 76th minute and
Matteo Russo made it count, placing it into the corner and out of the extended reach of Sela. Russo's goal was his third of the season and second game-winning-tally.
Engel made three saves to earn his sixth win of the season, while Sela made seven in a losing effort.
The Violets return to action on Saturday when they take on Brooklyn College at 2:30pm in Brooklyn.
