The New York University women's soccer team suffered a tough, 2-1 loss to host University of Scranton on Tuesday, September 18, in Scranton, PA.
Scranton (5-0-1) was awarded a penalty kick with 18 seconds remaining after an NYU (3-3-0) player committed a hand ball in the box, and the Lady Royals converted the kick to break a 1-1 tie.
Neither team took a shot in the first 20 minutes of action and the game remained scoreless at halftime, but the action picked up a great deal in the second half.
Scranton opened up the scoring in the 55th minute when Rebecca Russo found the back of the net off a feed from Erica Licari.
The Violets tied the game 4:05 later when
Maddie Peña connected with
Ashlyn Krygowski for a goal. Pena placed a perfect pass into the box and Krygowski fired it past Scranton goalkeeper Colleen Berry to knot the score at 1-1.
It appeared the Lady Royals would re-take the lead in the 83rd minute, but NYU goalkeeper
Meghan Marhan made four saves in less than 30 seconds to keep the game tied.
The contest looked to be heading to overtime, but Scranton caught a break in the final seconds and Licari capitalized, shooting her penalty kick past Marhan to extend the Lady Royals' unbeaten streak to six.
Berry and Marhan each made eight saves in the game and the NYU defense also was credited with a pair of team saves.
NYU returns to action on Saturday when they hit the road again, traveling up to Newbugh, NY, to take on Mount Saint Mary College. Kickoff is slated for 2pm on Kaplan Field.
