The New York University women's volleyball team completed competition with two matches at the Knights Invitational on Saturday, September 15, on the campus of Neumann University in Aston, PA.
After winning its first two matches on Friday, NYU (9-3) faced host Neumann (6-7) in the first match and won in straight sets 25-23, 25-11, 25-21. The Violets then concluded play with a tilt vs. the University of Scranton (8-5) and completed the four-match sweep with a 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19) victory.
In the first game of the first match, the Violets led by as many as four before the Knights pulled to within one on several occasions. However, a kill by
Sabrina Krebs gave NYU the opening win.
The Violets scored the first four points and the final five points of the second set to take an easy victory. The third set was tighter, but NYU was never seriously threatened en route to clinching the match.
Abby Ausmus led the Violets with 10 kills, while both
Stella Alverson (20) and
Katie Goyette (11) added double-digit assists.
Jacqueline Kupeli produced double-digit digs (11).
"We were firing on all cylinders in the first match due to our team's ability to control the ball in serve receive and defense," said Head Coach
Andrew Brown. "A balanced attack put a lot of pressure on our opponent."
The second match was much closer as the Violets won the first set, but then dropped their first of the afternoon. In the pivotal third set, NYU led by as many as four points, but trailed by as many as three. Behind 22-21, the Violets won the final four points of the set, clinching on a kill by Ausmus.
The final set saw NYU erase an early three-point deficit. Trailing 9-6, the Violets scored the next six points and managed to maintain an advantage the rest of the way. The lead grew to as many as seven points before a
Gretchen Kincade kill finally clinched the match.
Ausmus and
Emily Kleck each had a team-high 12 kills. Alverson (27) and Goyette (18) again did their thing, while Kupeli (21) led five Violets in double-digit digs.
"Our effort carried over into the second match," added Brown. "They did a good job of putting pressure on us, but we accepted the challenge and fought really hard to close out the weekend successfully. We are looking forward to more opportunities this week to continue to improve."
The Violets return to action this Thursday, September 20, when they travel to Riverdale, NY, to face host College of Mount St. Vincent. First serve is set for 7:00pm.
