The New York University men's soccer team dropped its first game of the 2018 season, falling 3-2 to Rutgers University-Camden on Friday, August 31, at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ.
Owen Smith scored the first goal of the game for NYU, finding the back of the net off a feed from
Louis Meeks in the fourth minute.
After that, however, the Scarlet Raptors took control as they tied the game less than 12 minutes after Smith's tally and scored again later in the half to go ahead 2-1.
A third goal from Rutgers-Camden in the 76th minute doubled its lead to 3-1.
Smith helped NYU get back on the scoreboard in the 78th minute, assisting on
Oliver Kleban's first-career goal. The Violets were unable to tie the contest over the final 12 minutes, ultimately falling by one goal.
NYU outshot Rutgers-Camden 13-11, including 12-7 in shots on goal. Scarlet Raptors' goalkeeper James Brett made 10 saves to help lead his team to victory, while
Grant Engel, the Violets' goalkeeper made four saves.
Seven NYU freshmen made their collegiate debuts on Friday, including
Sergio Monton and Kleban, who led the offensive effort with four and three shots, respectively.
The Violets return right back to action tomorrow, when they take on host Rowan at 7:30pm.
