The New York University men's soccer team notched a 1-0 overtime road victory against Rowan University on Saturday, September 1, in Glassboro, NJ.
The match remained scoreless throughout regulation. The Violets came closest to scoring in the 13th minute when
Maxi Rodriguez hit the crossbar with a shot and
Matteo Schlitz saw his rebounded effort saved.
The game completely turned in the 58th minute, when Rowan's Vincent Guzzo received a second yellow card, reducing the Profs to 10 men for the remainder of the game.
NYU began extra time on the defensive, as Rowan forced
Grant Engel's fourth save of the game at the start of overtime. Finally, the Violets' one-man advantage paid off when
Owen Smith headed home a rebound off of a Rodriguez shot from the top of the box, winning the game seven minutes into the extra period.
Despite being outshot by the Profs (1-1) 15-9, the Violets (1-1) matched Rowan's four shots on goal. Rowan players committed 25 fouls and totaled five yellow cards and one red card in the testy match, while NYU had 14 fouls and two yellows of their own.
The Violets return to action on Saturday, September 8, when they travel to New Paltz, NY, to take on SUNY-New Paltz at 12 pm.
