Softball Returns to Action

Violets Split a Doubleheader at College of Staten Island.

The New York University softball team returned to action for the first time in 10 days when the squad faced the College of Staten Island on Sunday, April 8, on Staten Island, NY.

The Violets (10-8), who last played on March 28, won the opener 7-4 before dropping the nightcap to the Dolphins (10-8) by a score of 6-2.

Things started out well for NYU in the opener as Taylor Kenerson's RBI groundout in the first inning gave the Violets a lead they would never relinquish. However, it was Mary Tindall who provided the bulk of the offense by clouting two home runs, a two-run smack in the fourth and a three-run dinger in the sixth.

Staten Island rallied for four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth before Caroline Saccacio's RBI single in the top of the seventh provided a final insurance run for NYU.

Karissa Zubulake went the distance for the Violets, picking up her second win of the season (2-1). She allowed only six hits and two walks whiile striking out seven.

The Violets again took an early lead in the second game. In fact, they took the lead immediately as Diana King led off the top of the first with her third home run of the season. NYU added an unearned run in the frame, as well.

However, the Dolphins answered quickly with a run in the bottom of the first. They plated another run in the fourth and then took control of the game with a four-run fifth.

NYU only managed five hits in the game, while Staten Island doubled that total with 10.

Cassi Parulis started the nitecap for NYU and went four innings. Scarlett Murphy pitched the final two.

"This was another example of our inconsistency this season," lamented Head Coach Now-Allah James. "We played pretty well in the opener, but just couldn't sustain any momentum. We need to maintain the high level of play that we've displayed on occasion, but just haven't been able to produce on a consistent basis."

SUNDAY SUMMARY:

- Tindall also had a hit in game two.

- Saccacio finished with four hits on the day.

- Jacqueline Finn had two hits in the opener.

The Violets open up University Athletic Association (UAA) action this weekend when they host Case Western Reserve University at Bahoshy Field in the Bronx. Doubleheaders are scheduled for Friday, April 13, and Saturday, April 14, with starting times of 4:00pm and 1:00pm, respectively.
