Violets Drop Doubleheader at Emory

The New York University softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader to host Emory University in Atlanta, GA, on Saturday, April 28.

The Violets (19-17, 4-8) dropped the first game to their University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent by a score of 5-1, then were edged by the Eagles (28-10, 15-1) 3-2 in the second game.

In the opener, the host Eagles scored four runs in the second inning off NYU starer Scarlett Murphy and the Violets never recovered. Emory tacked on another run in the fourth inning.

The Violets did manage to avoid a shutout by tallying their lone run in the sixth inning on Ashley Mains' RBI single. Diana King scored the run following a leadoff single.

Murphy allowed eight hits and struck out three in her six innings of work.

Claire Stefanelli went 2-for-3 in the contest.

The second game was tight throughout. Emory scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second, and held that advantage until the Violets scored in the top of the fifth when Kymber Yamamoto singled and was driven in by Dakota Damiani's double.

The Eagles recaptured their one-run lead in the bottom of the frame and held it until the visitors rallied to tie the score in the top of the seventh on Morgan Clemens' one-out home run. King followed with a single and Damiani was hit by a pitch to put two runners on, but the Violets were unable to capitalize and bring the go-ahead run home.

More disappointing, however, were two NYU errors in the bottom of the seventh that gave Emory an unearned run and a sweep of the doubleheader.

Olivia Mould, who went the distance, was the hard-luck loser for the Violets. She scattered nine hits, struck out four, did not walk a batter, and allowed only one earned run.

Stefanelli and Caroline Saccacio each chipped in with a pair of hits in the one-run defeat.

The Violets conclude regular-season play next weekend with another UAA four-game series. They will travel to the Midwest to face Washington University in St. Louis for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, May 4-5.
