The New York University softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader to host Emory University in Atlanta, GA, on Friday, April 27.
The Violets (19-15, 4-6) dropped the opener of the University Athletic Association (UAA) twinbill by a score of 7-1, then fell again to the Eagles (26-10, 13-1) 6-3 in the nitecap.
NYU managed only three hits in the opener, as Emory's Jacqueline Spizizen went six innings and struck out seven, allowing only one of the Violets' hits.
NYU's only run came off reliever Audrey Weller in the seventh inning, as
Ashley Mains and
Claire Stefanelli led off with back-to-back singles. Mains scored on a wild pitch, but the Violets could not manage another baserunner in suffering the opening-game loss.
The second game started off better for the visitors, as
Samantha Sicignano's single and
Caroline Saccacio's double in the first inning gave NYU its first lead of the day.
However, the Eagles scored three in the bottom of the second off NYU starter
Diana King.
The Violets answered immediately with two in the top of the third to tie the game. King singled, advanced to second on an error, stole third, and scored on a passed ball. Saccacio then recorded another RBI with a sacrifice fly, scoring Sicignano.
But, Emory plated two runs in the bottom of the third and added a final tally in the fourth to double up the Violets.
King went the distance for NYU, but suffered her fourth loss of the season.
The two UAA foes go back at it again on Saturday for another doubleheader beginning at 12:00pm.
