The New York University baseball team suffered a 5-2 setback to Emory University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday, April 27, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.
The contest was the first of four this weekend between the Violets (26-9, 5-8 UAA) and Eagles (18-17, 9-4 UAA).
NYU struggled offensively on Friday, recording just two hits off of starting pitcher Richard Brereton, who tossed eight innings, and reliever Charlie Redovian, who pitched the ninth inning and earned his second save of the season. Brereton was perfect for 5.2 innings before
Francis Prior hit a double.
Emory scored a run in the first inning and four more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
After his double, Prior scored the first NYU run of the afternoon on an RBI from
Colman Hendershot.
Jonathan Iaione was then hit by a pitch to score
Ryan McLaughlin and make the score 5-2.
The Violets rallied in the ninth as their first two batters reached base, but Redovian escaped the threat.
Paul Gadaleta (two innings) and
Braeden Duff (one inning) helped keep NYU in the game with great efforts out of the bullpen. Gadaleta struck out a pair of Eagles, while Duff retired the side in order in the ninth inning.
The squads will continue their four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch of game one is slated for 12pm back at MCU Park.
