Baseball Defeats Yeshiva at MCU Park

Violets Top Maccabees 13-3

The New York University baseball team defeated Yeshiva University at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY, on Wednesday, April 25.

The Violets (26-8) defeated the Maccabees (3-21) by a score of 13-3.

NYU quickly grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Ryan McLaughlin led off the game with a single and scored from first on a throwing error after a Jack Walter bunt single. Cooper Halpern added the second run on an RBI groundout, scoring Colman Hendershot.

The Violets increased their advantage to 7-0 after the second frame. The first four batters of the inning reached base: Nick Loffredo singled, Chris Cassandra hit an RBI double, Austin Stenstedt walked, and McLaughlin was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout, three consecutive RBI singles by Hendershot, Coltrane Tait and Halpern made the score 6-0 before Hendershot scored on a wild pitch.

Yeshiva fought back the following two innings to bring the score to 7-3, but NYU shut the door for the remainder of the game, allowing only one hit after the fourth inning while continuing to add to its lead.

Seven Violet pitchers took the mound, including Will Jauss, who tossed two hitless innings, striking out and walking one apiece and throwing only 20 pitches.

NOTABLES
- Hendershot was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. The junior leads all NCAA Division III hitters with 59 RBIs, which is already a single-season program record.

- McLaughlin went 2-for-2 with a double, three runs scored and two hit by pitches. He has now been hit by 18 pitches this season, tied for fourth in the NCAA. One of three players he is trailing is teammate Walter, who was also hit by a pitch today to bring his season total to 19, tied for the national lead. NYU has now been hit by 94 pitches this season, 12 more than any other Division III program.

- Tait, Halpern and Matthew Bruno each contributed two RBIs.

- Matthew Millus recorded the first two at-bats of his collegiate career. Millus, a senior who has exclusively been a relief pitcher for NYU, is the program career leader in saves with 20.

The Violets resume action on Friday, April 27, for the opener of a four-game home series with Emory University, beginning at 3:00 pm at MCU Park.
