The New York University men's tennis team was swept by Division I Colgate University 7-0 on Sunday, March 4, in Hamilton NY.
NYU falls to 2-2 for the season while Colgate now sits at 6-4.
The Violets didn't go down without a fight, however, as
Umberto Setter and
Zeb Zheng (#1 doubles) and
Benedict Teoh and
Michael Li (#2 doubles) pushed their opponents to the absolute limit in two very close matches. Both resulted in 7-6 losses.
"Today's match was very hard fought," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "We had a chance at the doubles point, but lost two very close matches."
NYU also put up a valiant effort in singles, with Setter close to victory in a back-and-forth #1 singles match decided by a lengthy tiebreaker (7-6, 3-6, 11-9).
"In singles, I thought that our guys competed well. But, Colgate was the more aggressive team and were rewarded for that," added Choy. "Shot for shot, we were there. We just needed a few more chances at crucial points."
The Violets look to bounce back on Thursday, March 8, at 3:30 pm against The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ.
