Baseball Comes from Behind for First UAA Win

Violets Split Saturday Doubleheader with WashU

The New York University baseball team split a doubleheader with University Athletic Association (UAA) foe Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday, March 31, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

WashU (13-8, 2-1 UAA) took game one 6-2, before NYU (16-3, 1-2 UAA) came from behind to win game two 4-2.

Game One Recap:

Each team scored a run in the third inning before the Bears broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning and two more in the eighth.

Tim Salvadore started the game on the mound for NYU and went 4.2 innings. The junior only allowed three earned runs, but struggled with his command as he walked five Bears and hit a pair. Ryan Loutos earned the victory for WashU, pitching eight innings and allowing just four hits and two earned runs while striking out seven Violets.

The Violets recorded just five hits in the game including a pair from designated hitter Cooper Halpern. Colman Hendershot and Jonathan Iaione each knocked in a run for NYU,

Five different Bears knocked in a run to help their offensive effort, including Collin Kahal, who recorded three hits in the win.

Game Two Recap:

WashU continued its momentum from game one with a pair of runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead on the Violets and their senior right-handed pitcher Cameron Serapilio-Frank

NYU got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Iaione came around to score on a Bears' error and cut the visitor's lead in half. The Violets took their first lead of the day, and of the series, when they scored two more runs in the sixth inning on RBIs from Isaac Martinez and Jack Walter. The lead became 4-2 in the eighth inning when Martinez scored on a wild pitch.

Serapilio-Frank settled down after the second inning and pitched into the seventh inning, striking out six over 6.1 innings of work and earned his second victory of the week and fifth (5-0) of the season. The senior captain handed the ball to Gabriel Golob, who completed the seventh inning and sent the Bears down in order in the eighth. Senior captain Matthew Millus worked around a leadoff double in the ninth to earn his first save of the season and help the Violets earn their first UAA victory of the year.
