The New York University baseball team wrapped up its four-game University Athletic Association (UAA) series with Washington University in St. Louis with a 3-0 loss on Sunday, April 1, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.
NYU (16-4, 1-3 UAA) was shut out for the first time this season, while the Bears (14-8, 3-1 UAA) held their opponent off the scoreboard for the second time in 2018.
Rees Viersen and Tim Tague combined to record the shutout for WashU as Viersen tossed the first five innings to improve to 2-0 on the season and Tague pitched the final four to earn his second save of the year. The duo struck out 10 Violets on Sunday, while only allowing six hits and not issuing a walk.
Offensively, the Bears plated a run each in the second, fifth and sixth innings. Auggie Mense and AJ Dunham each had a pair of hits in the victory.
Six different Violets recorded one hit in the game including
Jonathan Iaione, who roped a double to left-centerfield in the sixth inning to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Teague was able to pitch out of the jam, however, and keep NYU off the scoreboard.
The Violets are scheduled to return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 3, when they wrap up a nine-game homestand with a 3:30pm contest vs. the City College of New York.
