Softball Splits Stevens Doubleheader

Violets Win Game One 4-2, Drop Nitecap 5-3

The New York University softball team played a home doubleheader against Stevens Institute of Technology at Bahoshy Field in the Bronx, NY, on Wednesday, March 28.

The Violets (9-7) defeated the Ducks (3-7) 4-2 in game one before falling 5-3 in game two.

NYU started well in the opener, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Samantha Sicignano scored on a Caroline Saccacio sacrifice fly. Sicignano tripled the Violet advantage in the second inning with a two-RBI single, and NYU held on for the victory.

Karissa Zubulake (1-1) went the distance, allowing one earned run and six hits while striking out five.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first in game two, pitcher/leadoff hitter Diana King tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the third. In the fifth, Saccacio broke the tie with a two-run blast that flew well over the left field fence.

The game remained 3-1 until the top of the seventh, but Stevens took advantage of a Violet error and scored four two-out, unearned runs to make the score 5-3.

The Violets did bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh when Taylor Kenerson was hit by a pitch with two outs. But, Saccacio grounded to third for the final out.

King suffered the hard-luck loss despite going the distance. None of the Ducks' runs were earned, as she struck out five, allowed six hits and only one walk.

"We should have won both, so the day is a disappointment," said Head Coach Now-Allah James. "Our fielding has to be better. We gave them too many opportunities, too many outs. We pitched great and should have swept. All we can do is continue to work and continue to get better."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Kenerson had two hits and scored a run in the second game.

- King and Morgan Clemens each had two hits in the opener. King has at least one hit in all but one game this season.

- King and Saccacio share the team lead with two home runs each.

The Violets return to action on Wednesday, April 4, for a doubleheader at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY. First pitch of the opener is set for 3:00pm.
