Softball Splits Pair of One-Run Decisions

Violets Fall to Rutgers-Newark 2-1 in Opener, Take Nitecap 7-6

The New York University softball team split its road doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark University on Sunday, March 25, in Newark, NJ.

The Violets (8-6) dropped the opener 2-1 and rebounded to defeat the Scarlet Raiders (10-3) in the nitecap 7-6.

After Karissa Zubulake's complete-game, seven-strikeout performance fell short in the opener, the Violets were in danger of being swept when they trailed 6-5 going into the top of the seventh of the nitecap.

However, NYU rallied in their final at-bat as Jacqueline Finn led off with a single. Ashley Mains' attempted sacrifice was thrown away by the Scarlet Raiders' third baseman and pinch-runner Honor Sankey advanced to third to put runners on the corners.

Mary Tindall followed with a RBI groundout to second with Mains advancing. After another groundout advanced Mains to third, Kymber Yamamoto doubled to left to drive in the go-ahead run.

Scarlett Murphy, who came on to relieve starter Diana King in the fourth inning, retired Rutgers-Newark 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame to secure the win for NYU. She wound up going 3-2/3 inning and allowing only one hit and one walk.

"We again showed a great deal of resiliency by battling back from behind," said Head Coach Now-Allah James, whose team also recorded a final-inning comeback in a 4-3 win against Western Connecticut State University on Saturday. "We continue to show a great deal of character in never believing we are out of a game."

The Violets did have a 5-2 lead, but the Scarlet Knights' four-run fourth put them in front and led to Murphy's appearance.

"Scarlet continues to be a stopper for us," James said. "She is very poised on the mound. She kept them off the board and allowed us the opportunity to come back."

Mains had two RBIs in the game, while Finn contributed three hits. King, Morgan Clemens and Taylor Kenerson each had two hits.

The first game was scoreless through six innings, but Jordan Stream's RBI groundout the Violets ahead 1-0 in the top of the seventh.

However, Brielle Mattiello's two-run walk-off double gave the Scarlet Raiders the opener.

NOTABLES:

- Claire Stefanelli had two of the Violets' four hits in the opener.

- Murphy now leads the Violets with three wins.

- King, who had two stolen bases in the second game, is now 14-of-15 on steal attempts this season.

The Violets return to the diamond this Wednesday, March 28, when they host Stevens Institute of Technology. The doubleheader at Bahoshy Field in the Bronx, NY, is scheduled to begin at 4:00pm.
