The New York University women's basketball team held off host Case Western Reserve University 67-62 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action at Adelbert Gymnasium on Sunday, February 4, in Cleveland, OH.
NYU (12-8, 5-4 UAA) defeated Case Western (4-15, 1-8 UAA) for the second-straight Sunday and now has now won four in a row heading into next Friday's match-up against first-place University of Chicago (18-2, 9-0 UAA) at the Sportsplex.
This Sunday's contest was far from the 42-point NYU victory when the two team's met last Sunday in Manhattan. Case Western Reserve led 49-47 after three quarters in this one before the Violets scored seven-straight midway through the final quarter to take the lead for good.
The 7-0 NYU run came over just two possessions as Kaitlyn Read scored four on the initial possession and
Kayla Patterson added three on the next trip down the floor. Read's four-point play came as she hit a corner three-pointer and was fouled after the shot, which sent her to the free-throw line where she was able to add a fourth point. Patterson took a feed from
Catherine Gould and went to the rim strong, hitting a layup and then converting a three-point play, the old-fashioned way.
From there, the Violets didn't let CWRU get any closer than three points. Case Western Reserve's Hillary Hellmann did have a chance to tie the contest with seven seconds to play, but her deep three-pointer did not go and
Mikaela Pyatt grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Pyatt sank both of her free throws to make the final score 67-62.
Read once again carried NYU on both sides of the floor. The graduate student scored a game-high 30 points, including 15 in the first half, to go along with a game-high nine rebounds. Patterson joined Read in double figures with 16 points of her own.
Hellman led the way for the Spartans with 23 points.
NOTABLES:
- Read was 5-for-10 from three-point range and 3-for-4 from the foul line.
- Gould scored a career-high seven points in 13 minutes of action. The freshman also grabbed three rebounds and dished out a pair of assists.
- Pyatt tied her season high with seven rebounds and also chipped in offensively with six points.
NYU returns to the court on Friday, February 9, when it hosts Chicago at 6pm at the Sportsplex. Earlier this season, the first-place Maroons came back from an early double-digit deficit to defeat the Violets 83-59 in Chicago.
