The New York University women's tennis team defeated Christopher Newport University 6-3 on Saturday, February 24, in Swarthmore, PA.
NYU improved to 2-0 on the season, while CNU dropped to 0-2.
The Violets took the #1 doubles matchup behind strong play from
Flyora Shiyanova and
Vanessa Scott (8-3), while also securing wins from
Anna Maria Buraya in #1 singles (6-2, 5-7, 6-1),
Coco Kulle in #2 singles (6-0, 6-1), Scott again in #4 singles (3-6, 6-3, 6-3),
Judy Kam in #5 singles (6-2, 5-7, 7-5), and
Rupa Ganesh in #6 singles (4-6, 6-4, 7-5).
"Kam got us a great win," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "And Scott gave us a big boost with her come-from-behind victory."
Other Highlights:
- NYU had three hard-fought losses today, Kulle and Buraya in #2 doubles (8-5), Ganesh and Kam in #3 doubles (9-7), and Shiyanova in #3 singles (8-6 (7-6), 3-6, 6-2).
- "This was a great character win for us early in the season and all the girls showed great determination and resolve," concluded Choy.
- The Violets are back in action against Haverford College on Saturday, March 3, at 10:00 am in Haverford, PA.
