The New York University women's soccer team scored two goals in the last 10 minutes and defeated #13-ranked Brandeis University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) matchup on Saturday, November 3, in Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
Trailing 1-0 after the Judges (12-4, 4-3 UAA) scored midway through the second half,
Nalani Ogawa (Mercer Island, WA/Mercer Island) took NYU's first shot on goal...and it went in. In tallying her first goal of the season, the sophomore was able to connect on a free kick from about 30 yards out which she perfectly placed between the goalkeeper's outstretched arms and the crossbar to tie the score with 9:41 left in the contest.
Then, with less than a minute to play, junior
Ashlyn Krygowski (Dunstable, MA/Worcester Academy) was able to collect the ball following senior
Maddie Peña's corner kick and push it into the net with just 29 seconds left for her fifth goal of the season.
"When we fell behind we didn't panic. There was still a lot of soccer time left," said Head Coach
Michele Canning. "We just moved our players forward a bit to try and help our offense."
The victory secured a second-place UAA finish for the Violets (10-5-3, 5-1-1 UAA) and bolstered the team's case for a potential postseason bid on a day when the squad's three seniors (
Peña,
Michaela Brickley (Hingham, MA/Milton Academy) and
Maddy Schier (Glenmoore, PA/Downingtown East)) were honored in a pregame ceremony.
Sophomore
Meghan Marhan (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge) stopped three of the four shots she faced, while the Violets scored on the only two shots they put on net.
"This was really big for us. It's the best finish we've had in the UAA since I've been here," Canning explained. "We've been through a lot of adversity this year, lots of injuries. I'm so proud of the way the players battled today and all season long."
On Monday, the coach and team will find out if the season continues.
