Women's Soccer Defeated by #13 Carnegie Mellon

Violets Fall in First UAA Contest

The New York University women's soccer team was defeated 1-0 by Carnegie Mellon University in both teams' University Athletic Association (UAA) opener on Saturday, September 30, in Pittsburgh, PA.

The loss snapped NYU's four-game unbeaten streak and dropped the Violets' overall record to 5-3-1. Carnegie Mellon, which is ranked #13 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, improved to 7-1-1 on the season. 

Haili Adams scored for Carnegie Mellon on the only first-half shot on goal by either team. Adams' goal was assisted by Ryan Casey 2:15 into the contest. 

The game remained 1-0 in favor of the Tartans for the final 87:45, but both teams brought more pressure in the second half. CMU added five shots on goal over the final 45 minutes while NYU was able to get two shots on target, both coming off the foot of Maddie Pena.

Sophia Danielsen made five saves for NYU, while Carolyn Botz recorded two to post the shutout for CMU.

NOTABLES:

- The shutout was the Tartans' seventh through nine games.

- Adams' goal was the first allowed by a Violet goalkeeper in more than 400 minutes. The last goal scored against NYU came late in the first half against Stevens Instiutute of Technology on September 10.

- Carnegie Mellon took all eight of the game's corner kicks. 

NYU returns to action on Monday, October 2, when it travels across the Hudson River to take on Rutgers University - Newark. Kickoff against the Scarlet Raiders is slated for 7:30pm in Newark, NJ.
