The New York University women's soccer team went on the road and defeated Rutgers University-Newark 2-0 on Monday, October 2, in Newark, NJ.
The Violets (6-3-1) scored both goals in the first half and held the Scarlet Raiders (8-5) scoreless throughout the entire 90 minutes to post their sixth shutout of the season.
Isabelle Turner opened the scoring just 5:59 into the contest. She took a pass from
Steph Ho just inside the box and headed it past the Raiders' keeper for her third goal of the season.
Then, at 29:20,
Ashlyn Krygowski connected on her first goal of the season. She received a pass from
Alex Benedict behind the defense and put it into the net from the left side of the box.
Sophia Danielsen recorded three saves in recording her second shutout of the season.
"I think the key to tonight's game was the way we pressured them throughout with our attacking," said Head Coach
Michele Canning. "We did a great job changing the point of attack, getting down the flanks and creating dangerous chances."
NOTABLES:
- Benedict now leads the team in assists (3) and points (11)
- All three of NYU's goaltenders (Danielsen,
Meghan Marhan,
Michaela Brickley) have posted two shutouts this season.
- NYU dominated offensively, finishing with a 28-10 advantage in shots, 11-3 in shots on goal and 6-1 on corner kicks.
"The amount of chances we created and the quality goals we scored helps build confidence going back into UAA play on Saturday," Canning explained.
The Violets return to action on Saturday, October 7, when they host Case Western Reserve University. Kickoff for NYU's University Athletic Association (UAA) home opener is slated for 1:30pm at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
