Women's Soccer Posts Shutout

Violets Defeat Mount St. Mary 2-0

The New York University women's soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 2-0 shutout over Mount St. Mary College on Saturday, September 16, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

The host Violets (3-2) scored the game's first goal late in the opening half (36:01) on Nalani Ogawa's first career goal. The freshman collected the loose ball in the top left of the box following a NYU corner kick and deposited it into the upper right corner of the net.

NYU doubled its lead when Alex Benedict, who took a game-high four shots, scored her team-leading third goal of the season. At the 60:51 mark, she connected on a free kick from the top left of the box. Knight goalkeeper Mary Riley did stop the ball, but it carried her just over the line and into the net.

Michaela Brickley (first half) and Meghan Marhan (second half) shared the shutout victory. Marhan, who was making her first collegiate appearance, recorded two saves. Brickley did not face a shot on goal.

"We prepared for the switching of goalkeepers before the game started," Head Coach Michele Canning revealed. "We graduated our starting keeper and now we have competition at that spot."

SOCC-ING STUFFERS:

- NYU outshot Mount St. Mary (3-2-1) 15-4 overall and 7-2 on goal. The Violets also had the advantage on corner kicks 5-0.

- The Violets have outscored their opponents 8-0 in the team's three wins this season. Brickley has recorded all three victories.

"We put a lot of emphasis this week in practice on finishing, so everyone was involved today," Canning explained. "We feel good about the depth we have
and our players are getting good minutes."

The Violets return to action this Tuesday, September 19, when they host the University of Scranton at Gaelic Park. First kick is scheduled for 7:00pm
