Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Falls to #24 Christopher Newport

Violets will Look to Bounce Back with a Pair of Matches Tomorrow

The New York University women's volleyball team fell to Christopher Newport University in its first match at the Ducks Classic, hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. The two-day event is taking place on Friday, September 15, and Saturday, September 16.

Christopher Newport, ranked #24 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, improved to 7-1 with the 25-13, 25-8, 25-12 victory, while the Violets dropped to 3-7.

The Captains set the tone early, scoring the first five points of the match. From there, CNU maintained control en route to the 25-13 opening set win.

In the second set, the squads split the first four points before the Captains scored nine of the next 10 to take an 11-3 advantage early. NYU was able to get within five, but couldn't get any closer as CNU won the set 25-8 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Violets were able to keep the third set close for a bit longer against their ranked foe, but ultimately were unable to keep up with the Captains. With CNU leading 18-12, the Captains rattled off seven-straight points to earn a 25-12 third-set win and the three-set sweep.

NOTABLES:

- Rayne Ellis recorded three of NYU's six blocks.

- Caroline Rapp was the Violets' most efficient attacker, tallying five kills on 15 attempts with just two errors (.200).

- Friday's match was NYU's first of 2017 against a ranked opponent. Later this season, the Violets will take on #4 Emory University, #12 Washington University in St. Louis, #16 Carnegie Mellon University, and #19 Eastern University.

NYU wraps up play in Hoboken tomorrow, when it takes on Eastern at 11am and Arcadia University at 1pm.
