Softball Team Suffers Pair of One-Run Losses

Violets Drop Two to Case Western Reserve

The New York University softball team suffered a pair of one-run losses to Case Western Reserve University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader on Sunday, April 9, in Cleveland, OH.

The Violets (11-9, 1-3 UAA) dropped three of four to the host Spartans (14-9, 5-4) over the weekend.

NYU opened Sunday's doubleheader by scoring a run in the top of the first on Caroline Saccacio's sacrifice fly.

Case Western took the lead with three runs in the third and added one in the fifth.

Trailing 4-1, the Violets rallied to within one on Claire Stefanelli's two-run homer in the top of the sixth, but that was as close as they got.

In game two, Case Western opened the scoring with a run in the first inning. The Violets tied it in the second on Rachel Fulton's single.

NYU exploded in the fourth, scoring four runs highlighted by Molly Webber's two-RBI double. Saccacio and Ashley Mains added RBI groundouts.

The Spartans plated one in the fifth and entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 5-2. However, they managed five hits in the frame and eventually won the game on Melissa Cutler's walk-off single.

Game-One Notables:

- Diana King started for the Violets and allowed four hits and three runs in her four innings of work. Katherine Piorkowski went the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits.

- NYU only had four hits (Stefanelli, Saccacio, Mains, Jacqueline Finn).

Game-Two Notables:

- Karissa Zubulake went the distance for NYU.

- King, Webber and  Fulton each had two hits.

The Violets return to action this Tuesday, April 11, when they host Manhattanville College. The non-conference doubleheader is set to begin at 4:00 pm at Fordham University's Bahoshy Field in the Bronx, NY.
