The New York University women's tennis team defeated William Smith College 8-1 on Saturday, March 25, at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx.
In doubles play, the Violets (4-3) earned wins from senior Laila El Dessouki and sophomore
Flyora Shiyanova (8-5) at #1 and from freshmen
Judy Kam and Rupa Ganesh (8-1) at #3 to take an early lead.
In singles play, all six NYU players - Shiyanova (7-6 (2), 6-3), sophomore
Vanessa Scott (6-4, 6-3), Ganesh (6-1, 6-0), Kam (6-0, 7-5), El Dessouki (6-2, 6-0) and freshman
Nikki Ong (6-2, 6-2) - picked up victories to handily defeat the Herons (5-4).
"We worked through a bit of a slow start, but picked up the win" said NYU Head Coach
Horace Choy. "We'll look to build on that for tomorrow's match."
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:
- Before the match, El Dessouki, the lone senior on the roster, was honored as part of Senior Day.
"As it was Senior Day, it was fitting to get two important points from Laila," added Choy.
The Violets are back in action tomorrow against the University of Rochester at the Stadium Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am.
