The New York University women's tennis team defeated Haverford College 9-0 in its season opener on Friday, February 24. The match was played at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, PA.
NYU won all three doubles matches then took all six singles matches en route to a 9-0 victory without dropping a set.
"It's always good to get the first win out of the way," said NYU Head Coach
Horace Choy. "We played three freshmen and it was great to see them compete. Haverford played hard, but we responded well."
The Violets set the tone early with doubles victories from
Flyora Shiyanova and
Laila El Dessouki (8-3),
Alice McGinty and
Vanessa Scott (8-6) and
Judy Kam and
Rupa Ganesh (8-3).
NYU took the momentum into singles play and picked up wins from Shiyanova (6-3, 6-0), McGinty (7-5, 6-1), Scott (6-1, 6-1), Kam (6-0, 7-5), Ganesh (6-1, 6-2), and
Nikki Ong (6-2, 6-4).
"We have a short turnaround for tomorrow's match, but hope to build on this win," concluded Choy.
The Violets will return to action tomorrow, February 25, when they take on host Swarthmore at 12:00 pm.
