Women's Basketball Falls Short on Saturday

Violets Defeated by Brandeis 50-47 in Regular-Season Finale

The New York University women's basketball team completed its 2016-17 regular season with a 50-47 home loss to Brandeis University on Saturday, February 25, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.

The Violets ended the regular season with a 13-12 overall record and a 3-11 mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA). Brandeis finished at (12-13, 4-10).

Amy Harioka's game-opening jumper gave NYU its only lead of the first half. She scored seven of the Violets' 14 points as Brandeis took a 21-14 lead after the opening quarter. Her three-pointer with 3:07 left in the first gave her 1,000 career points, only the 16th  Violet to reach that plateau.

NYU fell behind by eight, 24-16, early in the second quarter, but utilized an 11-4 run to pull within 28-27 before Brandeis took a 30-27 lead into halftime.

The Violets finally reclaimed the lead at 34-33 on Simone Jacques' three-pointer with 5:02 left in the third quarter, but trailed 41-38 heading into the fourth.

After falling behind by as many as six, Shay McGoey's free throw with 1:40 left brought the Violets back within three.

However, neither team scored again as the regular-season ended for both squads.

Harioka finished with a team-high 17 points, while Kayla Patterson recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. McGoey (11 points) also scored in double figures.

"We played hard. The loss wasn't due to a lack of effort," said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "Brandeis is a very good defensive team and they made it difficult for us to score. That being said, we had some good looks in the second half but we just couldn't get them to go down."

NOTABLES:

- NYU's four graduating seniors (Harioka, Jacques, Lindsey Oldshue, and Kaitlyn Read) were honored in a pregame ceremony.

"They are a special group. Our first recruiting class," Hall-Gregory explained. "They have been 'all in' the whole way, and they've done a great job as leaders and mentors for our younger players."

- Paris Hodges led Brandeis with a game-high 25 points.

- Patterson also contributed two blocks, two assists and a steal.

Having finished the campaign with a winning record, the Violets are eligible for an ECAC postseason bid. The field will be announced on Monday.
