Women's Basketball Falls to Chicago

Violets Close Out Regular Season Saturday vs. Brandeis

The New York University women's basketball team fell to the University of Chicago, 59-37, on Sunday, February 19, in Pleasantville, NY.

The Violets (13-11, 3-11) hosted the University Athletic Association (UAA) contest at Pace University.

NYU opened up the scoring on a jump shot from Mikaela Pyatt, but it was all Chicago (18-6, 11-2) after that. The Maroons answered Pyatt's bucket with a 16-4 run and eventually led 16-8 after the first quarter.

Chicago dominated the second quarter as well, outscoring the hosts 20-5 and took a 38-13 lead into the locker room at halftime.

"I think a lot of the credit needs goes to Chicago," said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "They brought energy and enthusiasm from the start and we didn't match it."

The Violets played much better in the second half, winning the third quarter 12-9 and cutting the deficit to as little as 14 on several occasions in the fourth quarter. Their early hole was too large to dig out of, however, and the Maroons went on another late run en route to the 22-point victory.

Elizabeth Nye scored a game-high 11 points to lead a balanced Maroons' offense.

NOTABLES:

- Liv Linebarger led the Violets with nine points. The junior also grabbed six rebounds.

- Kayla Patterson led the squad in rebounds with seven.

- Cassidy Fontana played a season-high 21 minutes off the bench. The junior scored five points and grabbed six rebounds.

"She was on every loose ball," added Hall-Gregory. "I try to reward the players that get after those 50-50 balls and she did that today."

- The Violets failed to make a three-pointer for the first time in 132 games. Sunday marked the first time they did not make a shot from long range since a contest on Feb. 12, 2012 at the University of Rochester.

NYU closes out its season against Brandeis University on Saturday, February 25. Tip-off against the Judges is set for 1pm at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.
