Women's Basketball Falls to Washington University

Violets Defeated by #7 Bears

The New York University women's basketball team was defeated 66-37 by #7 (D3hoops.com) Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, February 17.

The Violets (13-10, 3-9) hosted the University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on the campus of Pace University in Pleasantville, NY.

NYU took its only lead on the game's opening basket by Shaye McGoey. After that, it was all Bears (21-2, 10-2) as they used a 16-0 run to take a 24-5 lead after the first quarter and extended it to as many as 32 points in the second before settling for a 39-9 halftime advantage.

"Against a team like Wash U,. you have to be ready from the tip otherwise thay're going to take advantage right from the start," said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "And we just weren't ready from the beginning."

McGoey scored the opening basket of the second half, but things continued to go the Bears' way as their lead reached a high of 38 points, 56-18, before the Violets ended the third quarter trailing 58-23.

NYU got as close as 27, 64-37, in the final quarter.

"I think in the second half we did a much better job and some of the players off the bench gave us some energy," Hall-Gregory added.

Gabby Heinsinger led the Violets with a career-high nine points, while also adding a career-best four rebounds.

GAME NOTES:

- Amy Harioka scored seven points, increasing her career total to 987.

- Cassidy Fontana collected a team-high six rebounds.

- Liv Linebarger led NYU with three assists.

- Natalie Orr led Washington with 16 points.

The Violets return to the court on Sunday, February 19, when they host another UAA foe, the University of Chicago. Tipoff in Pleasantville is set for 2:00 pm.
