Violets Drop a 91-66 Decision to Washington University in St. Louis

The New York University men's basketball team was defeated by Washington University in St. Louis, 91-66, on Friday, February 17, in Pleasantville, NY.

The Violets (7-16, 2-10) hosted the University Athletic Association (UAA) contest at Pace University.

NYU took its only lead, 3-2, on Ross Udine's three-pointer in the game's first minute.

The Violets fell behind by eight before Joe Timmes' trey brought NYU back within two, 29-27, with 7:01 left in the first half.

The Bears (19-4, 11-1), ranked #7 nationally by D3hoops.com, then went on a 22-5 to end the half and went into the locker room ahead 51-32.

"They're a very good team, one of the best in the country," said NYU Acting Head Coach Taylor Roth. "We did a good job going back and forth for a while, but I think their depth wore us down."

Washington increased its lead to a game-high 29 points, 74-45, midway through the second half. However, NYU went on a 13-2 run and cut the deficit to 18, 76-58, on Ross Udine's layup with 8:33 remaining.

However, NYU never got any closer as the Bears went on to the 25-point victory.

Jimmy Martinelli finished with a career-high-tying 19 points for the Violets. He also led the team with eight rebounds and two blocks.

"Our guys fought hard, but it was just too much to overcome," Roth added.

NOTABLES:

- Udine also scored 19 points and a team-high seven assists.

- Joe Timmes added 14 points.

- Nathan Gertler played a career-high 16 minutes and grabbed a career-best six rebounds.

"Nate hadn't gotten into a game in a while, but he was prepared," Roth said. "He earned it in practice and really rebounded the ball well."

The Violets return to the court on Sunday, February 19, when they host another UAA foe, the University of Chicago. Tipoff in Pleasantville is set for 12:00 pm.
