Men's Basketball Defeated by Chicago

Violets Close Out Regular Season Saturday vs. Brandeis

The New York University men's basketball team was defeated by the University of Chicago, 80-60, on Sunday, February 19, in Pleasantville, NY.

The Violets (7-17, 2-11) hosted the University Athletic Association (UAA) contest at Pace University.

Chicago (15-9, 7-6) scored the first 10 points of the game and never looked back, leading by as many as 20 points in the first half.

"We got off to another slow start and it really put us in a hole," said Assistant Coach Michael McSloy. "We took some off-balanced shots early when we could've moved the ball more and got better looks."

In the second half, the Maroons started out hot once again and led by a game-high 26 three minutes into the frame. NYU responded with 10 straight points as part of a 22-7 run to cut the lead down to 11.

"We took much better shots during that span," added McSloy. "We also played real hard on defense which helped our transition game."

That was as close as the Violets were able to get and a late Maroons' run gave the visitors a 23-point lead with under two minutes to play.

Colin Barthel, one of four Chicago players to score in double-figures, led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field.

Barthel was also 2-for-4 from three-point range as the Maroons sank eight triples in the game, while NYU made just one from long distance in the 20-point loss.

NOTABLES:

- Joshua Bunch and Ted Georgiadis each came off the bench to score 12 points to lead NYU.

- Joe Timmes grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for the Violets. The senior captain also chipped in offensively with nine points.

- Ross Udine finished with 10 points and five assists. The junior now has 987 career points.

NYU closes out its season against Brandeis University on Saturday, February 25. Tip-off against the Judges is set for 3pm at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.
