Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

#9 Men's Volleyball Comes Back to Beat #2 Stevens Tech

Violets Win Final Three Sets to Clinch Win

The New York University men's volleyball team came back from a two-set deficit to defeat Stevens Tech (16-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-11) in United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action on Wednesday night, February 15, at NYU's Brooklyn Athletic Facility.

NYU (8-3, 4-0 UVC), ranked #9 in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, beat the second-ranked team for the second time in five days. Last Saturday, the Violets knocked off then-#2 SUNY New Paltz in straight sets.

Wednesday's loss was Stevens Tech's first in 11 matches this season.

The Ducks jumped out to a 2-0 lead after dominating the opening set and winning a tight second set. The second frame saw NYU take a 2-1 lead, but Stevens quickly tied it and the Violets never led again. There were eight ties in the set and the Ducks scored the last two points on a kill from Gabe Shankweiler and a NYU attack error.

"We knew after two sets we would need to change some things," said NYU Head Coach Jose Pina. "The one thing I saw starting to change towards the end of the second set was our guys were gaining confidence."

The Violets took the momentum from a close second set and won the third and fourth sets, setting up a decisive fifth frame.

NYU scored four of the first five points in the fifth set and never looked back. The Violets led 14-7, but the Ducks scored four straight to make the score 14-11. The ensuing Stevens serve went long and NYU finished the comeback and won the match 3-2.

"I saw a young team starting to play more aggressively as the match went on," added Pina. "We began to dictate the pace and put pressure on our opponent."

The Violets improved to 3-0 in five-set matches this season.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Alex Li (13), Evan Lindley (11) and Neil Ferraro (10) all finished with double-digit kills for NYU.

- Derrick Chiu finished with a match-high-tying 38 assists.

- Three different Violets -Derrick Chiu, Andrew Zhu and Connor Keowen- each tallied nine digs.

The Violets will return to action on Wednesday, February 22, against New Jersey City University. First serve against the Gothic Knights is slated for 7pm at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
