Men's Volleyball Wins at Home

#5 Violets Defeat New Jersey City 3-0

The New York University men's volleyball team, ranked #5 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, defeated New Jersey City University in three sets on Wednesday, February 22, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility in Brooklyn, NY.

It was the fourth-straight win for the Violets (9-3), who were victorious by scores of 25-23, 25-18, 25-15 over the Gothic Knights (2-8).

NYU Head Coach Jose Pina rested most of his regulars for this non-conference match-up. Alex Li, Derrick Chiu, Sean Leahy, Evan Lindley, and Neil Ferraro did not see any court time during the match.

"We wanted to give some more of our players the chance to compete and take an opportunity to rest some of the starters," Pina said. "They did a good job of filling in and showing their talents on the court."

Several players finished with career highs, including Adam Lee (10 kills), Stephen Tan (nine kills) and David Ho (eight digs).

The first set was tight, as NYU never led by more than four or trailed by more than one. The Violets clinched the set on Matin Bikdeli's kill.

The second set was tied 13-13 when NYU scored the next two points and never trailed again.

The final set was all NYU, as the Violets scored the first four points and led the entire way.

NET-ABLES:

- NYU hit .297, while NJCU finished at .065

- Bikdeli finished with a match-high 21 assists.

"It was good for these guys to have the experience of playing a full match and producing another winning effort," Pina concluded. "This is something that will only make us stronger as the season continues."

The Violets return to action on Wednesday, March 1, when they travel across the Hudson River to face local rival Stevens Institute of Technology. First serve in Hoboken, NJ, is set for 7:00 pm.
