The New York University women's basketball team came up short against the College of Staten Island, 65-62, on Wednesday, November 29, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.
Staten Island improved to 4-1 on the season, while NYU's record now stands even at 3-3.
Ten first-quarter turnovers plagued the Violets, who fell behind big early and, despite a valiant second-half effort, were unable to climb all the way back. NYU trailed 17-10 after one quarter and fell behind by 16, 36-20 at halftime.
The second half was a different story, however, as the Violets clawed their way back into the contest. Staten Island looked in control with a 56-42 lead with 5:43 remaining, but a 9-0 NYU run capped by an old-fashioned three-point play from
Kayla Patterson, cut the margin to just five in less than 1:30 of action.
Gabby Heinsinger's three-pointer with 2:41 on the clock cut the deficit to three, 57-54, but the Dolphins scored the next four points to increase their lead back to seven. NYU scored eight points on its next (and final) three possessions, but it wasn't enough as Staten Island sank all six of its late free throws to ice the game.
Christinia Pasaturo, who entered the game averaging 24.5 ppg, led all scorers with 19 points.
Kaitlyn Read was NYU's leading scorer for the fifth time in six games this season. The graduate student finished with 16 points to go along with eight rebounds and six assists.
NOTABLES:
-
Cassidy Fontana grabbed a career-best eight rebounds for the Violets.
-
Olivia Linebarger scored eight points and added eight boards.
- Heinsinger (4-for-7) and Read (4-for-8) each hit four triples in the loss.
- Pasaturo and teammate Samantha Flecker both played the full 40 minutes for CSI.
- The victory was just the third all-time for the Dolphins in 24 matchups against the Violets.
NYU returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Lexington, VA, to take on Washington & Lee University. Tip-off against the Generals (4-1) is scheduled for 2:00pm in Doremus Gymnasium.
