The New York University women's soccer team defeated Case Western Reserve University 2-1 in its first University Athletic Association (UAA) home game of the season on Saturday, October 7, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
The Violets (7-3-1, 1-1 UAA) got behind early, but rallied for two second-half goals to defeat the Spartans (5-7-0, 0-2 UAA).
The opening goal of the contest was scored within the first five minutes. Case's Kimberly Chen dribbled past a defender and then flicked her shot past NYU keeper Sophia Danielsen.
"After we conceded that first goal, it was important that we maintained our confidence," explained Head Coach
Michele Canning. "We stayed patient and didn't get frustrated."
The score remained tied until early in the second half when
Charlotte Herbertz took a pass from
Alex Benedict and converted her third goal of the season at 50:43.
The game-winning goal came off the foot of
Tori Bianco. Herbertz fed her a pass at the top off the right box and Bianco chipped a shot over the goalie and into the upper left corner of the net.
"It's a big boost for us to win our UAA opener at home," said Canning. "It's important for the players' confidence that we can come back and win a game in which we've fallen behind. That's the first time we've done that this season."
NOTES:
- Danielsen recorded one save in securing the victory.
- Bianco's tally was the first of her collegiate career.
- NYU out-shot Case 18-4 overall.
- The Violets took eight corner kicks, while the Spartans only had one.
NYU returns to action on Friday, October 13, when the Violets travel to Atlanta, GA, to face UAA-foe Emory University. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm.
