The New York University women's soccer team fell 1-0 to defending NCAA Champion Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, October 29, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
NYU is now 10-5-2 this season and 2-3-1 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play, while the Bears improved to 14-1-1 overall and 5-1-0 in UAA action.
The contest was the 25th-ranked (United Soccer Coaches poll) Violets' second-straight against a top-10 team. NYU fell to top-ranked University of Chicago, 2-0, on Friday.
After a scoreless first half, Ellie DeConick headed a ball past NYU goalkeeper
Sophia Danielsen to score the game's only goal in the 50th minute. DeConick headed in a perfectly placed corner kick from teammate Darcy Cunningham for her eighth goal of the season.
The game was played through heavy downpours causing puddling throughout the field. The conditions made it difficult to move the ball up and down the field as the squads combined for just 14 total shots (10-4 WashU) and five shots on goal (3-2 WashU).
While scoring chances did not come often, the Violets had a great opportunity off a corner kick in the 20th minute.
Alex Benedict sent in the corner kick and Nalani Ogawa pinched in from her defensive position to fire a shot on goal that was blocked by Bears' defender Kelly Von Zup, who was awarded a team save.
WashU goalkeeper Emma Greenfield saved the only other NYU shot on goal and posted her seventh shutout of the season.
Prior to the game, NYU honored its seniors during the team's annual Senior Day Ceremony. The four-year team members of the women's soccer class of 2018 currently have an overall record of 49-19-11.
The Violets wrap up their regular season next Saturday, November 4, when they travel to Waltham, MA, to take on Brandeis University. Kickoff against the Judges is slated for 2:30pm.
