The New York University women's soccer team lost 2-0 to the University of Chicago in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Friday, October 27, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
Both squads were ranked in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, as the Maroons (16-0-0, 5-0-0 UAA) are the nation's top-ranked team and the Violets (10-4-2, 2-2-1 UAA) entered the rankings for the first time at #25.
The two Maroons' goals came late in the first half and were both set up by Mia Calamari, who leads the UAA in assists with 16.
Calamari set up the first goal at 34:14 when she sent in a long-distance shot that NYU goalkeeper
Sophia Danielsen was able to punch out. Maddie DeVoe was able to knock the rebound past Danielsen to put Chicago in front, 1-0.
The second goal came as the visitors were awarded a corner kick with 15 seconds to play in the opening half. Chicago was able to rush to set up their corner and Calamari placed the ball perfectly in the box and Claudia Hodgetts headed it into the back of the net to put Chicago ahead 2-0 heading into halftime.
Danielsen saved all three Maroons' shots on goal in the second half to finish with eight, the second-most of her career.
Kaite Donovan and Miranda Malone split the goalkeeping duties for Chicago and combined for three saves to post the shutout.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Chicago outshot NYU 22-7 overall and 10-3 in shots on goal.
-
