Violets Return to Action Sunday at Chicago

The New York University women's basketball team fell 80-48 to host Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, January 20, 2017.

The loss drops NYU's overall record to 10-5 and the Violets are now 0-4 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action. WashU improves to 13-2 this season and the 12th-ranked Bears' (d3hoops.com poll) UAA record now stands at 2-2.

"They moved the ball real well tonight and were able to get great opportunities," said NYU Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory

A 9-0 WashU run early in the opening quarter helped the Bears turn a three-point deficit into a six-point lead, one that it would hold onto for the rest of the contest. The Bears' offense shot 50% (9-18) in the first quarter and helped the hosts race out to a 24-15 lead after 10 minutes of play.

NYU cut the lead to as little as five in the second quarter, but another WashU run improved its lead to 38-27 at halftime.

The second half was all WashU, with the Bears extending their lead to as many as 34.

Six different WashU players tallied at least eight points. Zoe Vernon and Lily Sarros both scored 13 to lead all scorers.

NOTABLES:

- Kayla Patterson, Amy Harioka and Liv Linebarger each scored eight points to lead the Violets.

- Lauren Brown recorded a game-high-tying eight rebounds.

- Simone Jacques drained a pair of three-pointers in the first half. The senior captain also recorded a game-best three steals.

- Harioka played a game-high 34 minutes .

- WashU out-rebounded NYU 39-34 and dished out 26 assists, while the Violets had just seven assists,

"The great part about the UAA is we get to get right back out their and play on Sunday," concluded Hall-Gregory. "We have a great group of young women and I know they'll be ready to work hard and bounce back."

NYU returns to action Sunday, January 22, when it continues its UAA midwest road trip at the University of Chicago. Tipoff against the Maroons is slated for 2pm (CT).
