Women's Basketball Nipped by Chicago

Maroons Score Game-Winning Basket in Final Seconds

The New York University women's basketball team fell just short against the University of Chicago, suffering a 69-67 setback in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Sunday, January 22, in Chicago.

Shaye McGoey hit a layup with 19 seconds remaining to tie the game for the Violets, but Chicago's Mia Farrell was able to score a basket of her own in the closing seconds to earn the two-point victory.

"I'm proud of our poise and resiliency," said NYU Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "We need to stay positive and move forward, the wins will come."

NYU (10-6, 0-5 UAA) led by as many as five in the first quarter, but the hosts battled back to lead by six after 10 minutes of play and eventually led by five at halftime.

Chicago extended its lead to as many as seven in the second half, but the Violets were able to chip away. A three-pointer from Simone Jacques closed the margin to two points with 1:46 remaining. Both teams were able to get stops before McGoey tied the game late.

Senior captain Amy Harioka led all scorers with 21 points.

Farrell, Olarichie Obi and Britta Nordstrom each scored 13 to lead the Maroons.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

- McGoey scored a career-high 20 points and also dished out a career-high-tying eight assists. The freshmen played the entire 40 minutes.

"Shaye can pass well, score and defend," added Hall-Gregory. "She is getting an opportunity to lead and grow and today was a sampling of what she's going to continue to be."

- Harioka shot 7-of-9 from the field and drained all four of her free throw attempts.

- Kayla Patterson led the Violets on the boards, grabbing six rebounds.

- McGoey and Harioka each had three steals.

NYU returns to action on Friday evening, January 26, when it travels north to Upstate New York to take on the University of Rochester. The Violets and Yellowjackets will tip off at 6:00pm.
