Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Falls at #11 WashU

Joe Timmes Leads NYU with 24 Points

The New York University men's basketball team was defeated 89-72 by host Washington University in St. Louis on Friday evening, January 20.

NYU's overall record now stands at 6-8 and the Violets are 1-3 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action. The Bears are 12-3 on the season and undefeated through four UAA games.

WashU used an 11-0 run midway through the second half to turn a 55-51 deficit into a seven-point advantage. The Bears never trailed again, and pushed their lead to 17 by the time the final buzzer sounded.

The first half was back-and-forth as both teams traded the lead eight times. A layup from Cameron Moore at the buzzer put NYU in front 36-35 at halftime.

"This is the third game in a row where I felt like we played harder than our opponents," said Assistant Coach Taylor Roth. "We are locked in as a team all the way down the bench."

Joe Timmes led all scorers with 24 points. The senior captain drained five three-pointers in the loss.

"Joe's a senior and he's playing like one," added Roth. "He works so hard that when he has a good game it isn't a surprise."

Six different WashU players scored in double figures. Matt Highsmith and Kevin Kucera each tallied 14 to lead their team.

Inside the Box Score:

- Ross Udine joined Timmes in double figures with 15 points.

- Jimmy Martinelli grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in just 18 minutes of action. Martinelli also scored seven points.

- Timmes also took down eight rebounds and had a pair of steals.

"We have another tough game coming up, but I know we'll be up for it," concluded Roth. "I really like the direction we are headed."

The Violets will be back in action Sunday when they take on the University of Chicago. NYU will tip-off against the Maroons at 12pm (CT).
